So you’re considering a change of accountant, or you're just starting out... what do you need to consider when looking for a new accountant?
Firstly, as you’d expect, make sure they’re qualified.
Secondly, software! We’re sure you’ve heard of Making Tax Digital by now. In April 2019 all businesses above the VAT threshold will have to set up a digital account and file quarterly returns online. So if they aren’t tech savvy already then you could be going through a tricky stage over the next few months! Ask them how they’re going to deal with MTD, or what they’re doing now ready to be compliant next year.
Look at their website, does the potential new accountant speak in a language that you can understand? Do they use complicated accounting jargon or are they plain speaking?
If you decide that they look like a good fit for you and your business get in contact with them. However, when you make initial contact, make sure they are interested in YOU! Or do they simply just want to sell, sell, sell?
Is your business in a niche sector? If it is then we think it’s worth finding a firm who is used to your sector or industry. They’ll ‘get you’ much quicker than another accounting firm.
And lastly, if you still want to know more about them, ask them about their growth plans, what their future looks like. In an ideal world you want to be with that accountant for many years to come so it’s important to know what they want to achieve too!Back to Blog
